For thousands of years, cannabis has been used in treating a wide array of conditions and symptoms.
Until recently, most of the evidence for how well medical cannabis works to treat different symptoms came mostly from the reports of people and their doctors.
But the development of prescription drugs that are made from cannabinoids (the active components in cannabis) allowed us to learn more about how those cannabinoids work in the body.
Best of all, over the past decade researchers have been conducting clinical trials to investigate the effects of medical cannabis on different symptoms, such as long-term (chronic) pain and illness-related wasting (weight-loss).
We now know more than ever before about how and why medical cannabis is used for so many different symptoms and conditions.
