Probiotics: Preventing Complications of Antibiotic Use
What are probiotics? Strength of the formulation (CFUs)
Bacteria, microbes

The strength of a probiotic formulation is an important consideration given that a minimum number of microorganisms must be delivered to the gut in order to have the intended health benefits.

For example, to reduce the risk of CDAD, evidence suggests that a minimum of 10 billion CFU (colony forming units) is required.14

Aside from the labelled strength, other factors impact the actual dosage of bacteria delivered to the gut:

  • Manufacturing
  • Storage/shelf-live
  • Resistance to the environment of the stomach and intestine
