When a person with lactose intolerance drinks milk or eats dairy products they tend to have some stomach problems. These include:7,8
- Stomach rumbling
- Feelings of bloating
- Feelings of cramping
- Stomach pain
These symptoms will normally start about 30 minutes to 2 hours after drinking milk or eating dairy.7 The more dairy products you have, the worse the symptoms.
Keep in mind that not everyone will experience the same effects. For example, some people may only experience the stomach rumbling and bloating, while others get the whole package. Everyone is different!
Warning signs of an allergy
Skin rash, swelling, hives or trouble breathing are not normal signs of lactose intolerance. These may occur with a milk allergy, which is more severe.2 If you experience signs of an allergic reaction, no matter how mild, tell your doctor right away.
