Head Lice: A Lousy Situation! What can I do to prevent it?

Lice are normally spread through head-to-head contact, and getting lice from personal and household items are unlikely. The best way to avoid getting lice is not having any head-to-head contact with a person with lice. It is usually recommended that you do the following to lower your chance of infection11:

  • Wash clothes, pillow cases, bed sheets, teddy bears etc on the hot water cycle (at least 50oC)
  • Drying in hot dryer for 15 minutes
  • Storing in sealed plastic bag for 2 weeks
Does keeping my hair extra clean help?

No, lice do not care whether the person has dirty hair or squeaky-clean hair. They are only looking for human blood, which they need to survive5.
