Heartburn: A Burning Sensation What is heartburn?

Despite its name, heartburn is not related to the heart. Instead, it is a painful, burning sensation in the chest just behind the breastbone.1 Heartburn is a common symptom of a condition known as gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD.

People with heartburn commonly also get a sour-tasting fluid in the back of the throat.2
