All About Gout What can trigger a gout attack?

Triggers are factors that can cause an attack in gout patients, such as:

  • Alcohol: particularly beer, red wine or binge drinking3
  • Red meat, organ meat and shellfish3
  • Foods and drinks high in sugar called fructose (i.e. pop, candy, canned fruit)3
  • Fad diets, such as high protein diet3
  • Starting gout prevention treatment3
  • Surgery or condition that cause a person to stay in bed3
  • Radiation1
